We are part of the Bracknell Forest Climate Change Partnership
Naturally, we are extremely keen to support Recycling, but it may surprise you to learn that we also support the new ABC, Alternate (week) Bin Collection, System Click here to read the Official Letter of Support No one likes change and we understand why people are complaining about the change to ABC, however, ABC has been tried and tested in many other parts of the UK already. It has made a huge impact on recycling levels where it has been introduced, it saves some money and will help us meet our goals and avoid huge environmental fines. The major concerns relate to volumes of waste and the potential for smells from longer storage of waste. The volume of waste issue has no case to answer in our view, if we recycle properly then we will have no problem. Those of us who already sort our waste have landfill bins that are barely one third full without any compression. We can do it and so can everyone else. The smells issue, bins smell when empty, the gunge in the bottom is much more than two weeks old. The primary cause of smelly waste are from (the good) bacteria breaking down organic matter mainly kitchen scraps forming the gunge in the bottom of the bin. This can be reduced, food waste can be wrapped in old newspaper/carrier bags this absorbs and contains juices and so reduces gunge in the bottom of the bin and eventually (when the bacteria finish off what is left) your bin will smell better than ever. Having dealt with the gunge your bin should smell a lot better than now. ABC is the biggest change to waste and recycling in years, it is a very positive move, the reticence of some people to change is understandable but unsupported by any evidence from other areas that have already made the switch to ABC. Re3 is the partnership between Bracknell Forest, Reading and Wokingham Borough Councils and Waste Recycling Group (WRG) set up to increase the amount of waste that is reused, recycled and composted across the three boroughs and minimise the amount of waste sent to landfill. There will never be enough recycling done in some peoples eyes, but some very significant progress has been made and will continue to be made. You probaly didnt know that the Doorstep Recycling Act of 2003 only requires each council to collect a minimum of 2 recycleable materials from our doorsteps. While there is always room for improvement, Bracknell Forest Council is clearly doing a lot better than that! Do please visit the re3 website for more information. This forum meets regularly and, via our representatives, offers Bracknell and District residents an opportunity to put any questions and gain feedback about waste management and recycling in general, and particvularly within our area. We may be able to answer your queries and concerns directly, but if we cant we will do our very best to have them answered ASAP. Bracknell Going Green - Friends Advisory Service We are keen to develop a comprehensive local advisory service to help
people live greener lives. The schools survey is aimed at finding out how we can help schools to be more green and crucially to involve and educate students that we do need to adopt green policies and reduce waste for our future survival a message which we hope they may take home and spread to the older generations who grew up not needing to worry about landfill and pollution in times when greenhouse gasses like CO2 were not considered pollution but "harmless".
